We had for some time been keen to see Marrakech and to go walking in the Atlas Mountains, so we decided to book into the Ramblers Trip: Marrakech and Harder Walking in the Atlas Mountains. We set out from Gatwick early on March 8th and arrived at Marrakech airport at about 2pm where we were met by Maria the local representative and by Barry, our tour leader. It was a short bus ride to the Hotel Islane which is opposite the Koutoubia Mosque. The first impression of Marrakech is of a red city - the city walls are indian red in colour as are most of the buildings. We soon met most of our co-ramblers on a short introductory walk round some of the souqs and to the big square Djemaa el-Fna.
On Monday morning we took a coach to the Ourika Valley and quickly found our rooms in the Hotel Amnagour at Aghbalou. We then took the coach to Setti Fadma and set out on our first walk up to the berber village at Tadrant.
