We took the bus to the ski resort of Oukaimeden (at 2500 m) and then walked up to a col at 3000m. The path is a donkey track that zigzags all the way up to the col: it is a good firm path for walking, but crossed a small patch of snow near the top. The guide calls the track the autoroute berbere. On the way, we saw some very small crocuses and many choughs and crows. It was very cold at the col and everyone put on their coats, gloves and hats.
We had our picnic lunch on the col, where we found sheltering rocks. Various local people with their donkeys, even whole families passed by over the col. A shepherd came by carrying two kids, followed by a few goats and a dog. The path over the col goes eventually to Setti Fatma (30 km away). From the col, berber villages can be seen below. The hills here are lightly covered with green grass at the lower levels and a few prickly shrubs.
We came down easily and had mint tea at the café in the resort. They get enough snow for only two months skiing but peple come here in the summer to walk. There is a CAF refuge.
The scenery on the bus route back is fine: between the red rocks there are green rocks like buttresses with green stones and dust apparently flowing down between the red rocks. We saw many berber villages, terraces and white blossom.
We went to La Kasbah again for drinks on the terrace. Dinner started with a delicious ratatouille-like salad (mostly aubergines, onions and cumin). This was followed by couscous with beef and vegetables.
