Our first impression of the souqs was of the many very colourful stalls selling dried fruit and nuts. We left most of the additional narrow alleyways for the next day's visit.
The Djemaa el-Fna is the central meeting point of Marrakech. It is an irregular shaped square and is so big that you don't notice the surrounding buildings. As the afternoon progresses the activities increase. There are numerous food stalls as well as many small groups of people watching performers. A group of young acrobats was very popular, but we also saw snake charmers and musicians. We tried a very tasty spice cake with cinnamon tea.
Dinner was on the balcony of the hotel with a fine view of the Koutoubia mosque reddening in the sunset. We were given a big self-service buffet with a choice of a large variety of salads, meat and vegetable dishes as well as sweets. Overall, the Hotel Islane is good value: it is a comfortable hotel in a convenient position and with a good view.
