Rimini

We spent our first night at the Hotel Card in Rimini. We also returned there on our penultimate night. On our first evening we passed the Tempio Malatestiano on the way for a meal and as usual were surprised by the abundance of beautiful architecture in Italy.

We went to visit it the next morning. Alberti designed a new marble facade and sides, attached to the exterior of an existing gothic church in 1460 for duke Sigismondo Malatesta who had a reputation for being both powerful and evil. This church contains the fresco by Piero della Francesca of SM in a fine cloak, kneeling before St. Sigismondo and accompanied by his two dogs.

We returned to Rimini on Sunday night. We managed to have a quick look at the Roman remains before dark. There is the Arch of Augustus, the Bridge of Tiberius and an amphitheatre.

The main square of Rimini is lined with palaces - the 14th century Podesta and another that was rebuilt after WW2.
