Our day off in Lairg. We went to the visitor center where a very helpful woman told us about local walks and gave us advice on our next day's ride to Tongue. We walked up Ord hill - an archaeological site with lots of humps and big piles of stones at the top. About 5000 years ago people lived here and there were trees, which were replaced by heather and peat about 1000BC when the climate changed. The centre has displays of the crofters' life style and some history. In the clearances people were turned out of their houses to allow sheep to be farmed. Heather was burned to allow shooting, making it difficult for new trees to grow. In the afternoon we walked along the road to look at the main Loch Shin - there appears to be no good path. Chatted with couple on cycles doing the 'End to End'. The B&B is very comfy with a sitting room and we had a picnic lunch in the dining room.
