Ludlow to Hereford

After a very good breakfast, we left Acorn Lodge with a fine start to the day. On the way back into Ludlow we looked at the remains of the bridge that was broken when the river Ludd flooded in summer 2007.

The town centre has many Georgian black and white houses; we walked round the outside of the castle, observing the start of an interesting-looking  long-distance path and enjoying the view over the river .

We rode on to Leominster through rolling landscape with many ups and downs.

Leominster (pronounced “lemster”) Priory Church - all norman with big round columns; but some extremely heavy rain started while we were inside the church and the tandem and our gear was outside getting very wet. The rain ran into the porch (a good foot deep) and then straight on into the aisles - we spent some time on the phone trying to get in touch with the vicar, but it was Sunday lunch time....

In the very large green area around the church we passed a beautiful black and white building (our only photo in Leominster).

After lunch in a pub, the rain had stopped and we attempted to follow the proposed route for Sustrans 44, stopping at Bodenham Church - an extremely well-explained gothic church with a lovely little window of St Michael and the dragon.

Hereford cathedral close is interesting with the statue of Edward Elgar, but the cathedral, regrettably, was shut, so we walked a circuit via the Victoria footbridge over the Rive Wye; there’s a nice park with access to the river on the south side, but on the north side, where the town centre is, it’s hard to access the river bank. Had a drink on a balcony over river in some modern place by the road bridge, then went on for meal at Pizza Express which is accessed from the main street, but has windows overlooking the cathedral close.

Sunday 7th July; Ludlow, Leominster, Bodenham, Hereford; 51 km

Stayed in The Holly Tree, 21 Barton Rd, Hereford, HR4 0AY . On a very noisy road, but the room was OK and they let us store the tandem in the conservatory accessible from the back garden via a little passage between the houses.
