Colmar is a medium sized town in the centre of Alsace. Its central pedestrian area runs through streets and alleyways that have been preserved since the middle ages. The highly decorated timbered houses are the finest we have seen and in good condition.
The Unterlinden museum is housed in monastery. It has a fine collection of gothic and renaissance church painting and sculpture. But the highpoint is the altarpiece made by Grunewald for the church at Issenheim.
The Maison des Tetes is probably the finset merchant's house in Colmar - there are numerous carved heads all over the front of the house and a statue of a cooper by Bartholdi (who made the Statue of Liberty) on the gable.
Hansi was an artist who worked in the late 19th and early 20th century in Colmar. There are a good collection of his shop signs in Colmar.
