The canal du Midi runs from Toulouse to Sête, passing through Castelnaudary, Carcassonne and Béziers on the way. It was built in 1680 from a design by Paul Riquet who devised a scheme for supplying it with water using a spring at the summit at Narouize. The 9 locks and the inclined plane bring the canal down the hill past Béziers.
