Albi is a brick built town on the river Tarn, about 75 km NW of Toulouse. It has many narrow pedestrianised streets. In the 12th century, the cathars (heretics) took refuge in Albi and are often referred to as the Albigeois. The big cathedral was built to show that the church had re-established its power.
