We planned to stay in Tende so as be able to visit the Museum of Merveilles which we did. But it turned out that Tende is a very attractive place in its own right, with narrow streets between slate-roofed houses clustered on the hillside. The nearby village of la Brigue has stone-built houses and several churches, all clustered round a river. Both Tende and la Brigue are part of the High Roya valley which was in Italy until 1947. When Nice rejoined France in 1860, Napoleon allowed Italy to keep this area because the king had his hunting grounds in the Mercantour Park.
