Tuesday 5 June

A cool morning and a small shower as we set off from Jeff and Jane's, but no more rain all day. We're really in the highlands now: very wide, rolling mountains, a few patches of snow, heather not yet in flower, but yellow gorse is everywhere - we noticed it smells like T-tree oil. We followed the Spey valley, stopping at Aviemore for lunch and to buy long socks. Continued to the Boat of Garten for a last view of the Spey and a visit to the steam railway, seeing many wild flowers including bluebells on the way. We found a nice B&B off the main road at Carrbridge. We walked along the river to see the old pack horse bridge and then walked in the forest. Then we sat and read the papers in a bar before supper at Carrmoor in the company of about a dozen bird watchers.
