Sunday 10 June

A fine morning and a sunny day, but misty after supper. We even got some sun burn. We sat and looked at Ben Loyal during breakfast, then set out along the Kyle and onto the coastline. We saw many beautiful beaches (e.g. Coldbackie) with cliffs and sand. Stopped for a rest outside a coffee house in Bettyhill (closed). We had soup at a pub in Strathy and then a picnic on the beach at Reay with sand dunes and a distance view of Dounreay. As we entered Caithness, the land flattened out and flagstones became evident (e.g. as fences). We didn't fancy Thurso for the night although it has a nice view from the bay with Orkney ahead. We found a B&B in Castletown - they have had no visitors for a month. Meal at Highland Restaurant where George had Pentland Firth cassoulet which was free of beans!
