June 2001. Tandem ride from Glasgow to John O'Groats and Orkney

We used Sustrans National Cycle Network Route 7 from Glasgow to Inverness and Sustrans Route 1 from Inverness to John O'Groats. We then went to Orkney for 5 days rest.

Friday 1 June

We took the train from Kings Cross to Glasgow. By the time we set off it was raining hard, but we very quickly found the bike route by the Clyde. It is almost entirely off-road all the way to Balloch at the foot of Loch Lomond, passing by John Brown's ship yards. It uses a canal towpath, a disused railway and some dedicated paths through pretty parks. One problem is the anti-motor-bike barriers which are very hard to get through with a fully loaded tandem. The track by the River Leven up to Balloch is very pleasant. Went for a meal in a pub and then a walk through the woods to see Loch Lomond.
