Up to the Refuge des Merveilles (first day of our walk)

We drove to the Mercantour from Nice, taking an attractive road via Sospel, Breil and Saorge. Then, a few kms before Tende, we turned left in the middle of the village of St. Dalmas de Tende and followed the narrow road up the hill to les Mesches, where we parked our car. We started walking from les Mesches by 11 am and arrived at the refuge of Merveilles by 5pm where we stayed the night. This refuge is rather spoilt by the fact that it can be reached by 4x4 vehicles, in spite of being in a National Park. It was very full, but they had remembered our booking.
